JEFFERSONVILLE, VT – January 13, 2026 – The Vermont Covered Bridge Society (VCBS) Education Committee delivered a dynamic, hands-on learning experience for students in northern Vermont, successfully launching a new educational unit focused on the state's iconic covered bridges. Vermont fourth graders traditionally study local history, making covered bridges a highly relevant topic.
The Education Committee has developed a specialized unit tailored for fourth-grade students, which was then adapted and expanded for third, fourth, and fifth-grade classes at the Coventry Village School.
"The enthusiasm from the students was remarkable," said Jeanne Beaudry, the Education Committee Chair. "Our goal is to connect young Vermonters with their state's unique heritage in a tangible way. We ended up spending eight days with the students, a truly rewarding stretch."
The intensive four-week unit, led by the school's Science/Social Studies teacher alongside VCBS volunteers, included several engaging activities:
Following the success of this northern Vermont initiative, the VCBS Education Committee is issuing an urgent appeal for volunteers. The Committee is looking for passionate members across the state to help expand its educational efforts.
"We have a strong start in northern Vermont, but there are students, scouts, and 4-H groups throughout the state who could benefit from learning about these treasures," stated VCBS President Beth Brown. "We need members willing to share their knowledge and enthusiasm in the central and southern parts of the state to help us grow this program."
