The Vermont covered bridge society
About our Organization

The Vermont Covered Bridge Society (VCBS) was founded in 2000 with a mission to preserve Vermont’s historic covered bridges and address the loss of our iconic structures.

For more than 25 years, our organization has been at the forefront of covered bridge activity. Through an active volunteer Board of Directors and many more volunteers who are passionate about the preservation and awareness of Vermont’s covered bridges, our mission states it best:

Our website has become a comprehensive resource, offering a wealth of information including news articles, tours, newsletters and links related to covered bridges. Explore our site, and if you’re interested in joining the Society, click here to learn more.

Semi-annual meetings are hosted at various locations throughout Vermont, fostering our fellowship as a community of covered bridge enthusiasts.

We hope you enjoy our site. Support our mission and become a member today. Thank you for stopping by, and may all your travels be “covered”!

About Our Bridges

Traditional Bridges: These are authentic, historic structures often built using original timber-framing techniques and specific truss designs.
Non-Traditional Bridges: Referred to as romantic shelters, these are typically smaller, modern, or decorative structures that resemble covered bridges but may not follow historic engineering standards.

The society tracks bridges that have specific historical or structural combinations, often detailed in their combined covered bridges tour, which likely includes bridges that share sites with other structures or specific engineering blends.

These are Vermont covered bridges that no longer exist due to natural disasters, arson, neglect, or modernization. The society maintains a database of these lost bridges to document Vermont’s architectural history.

Preservation & Resources

Yes. The VCBS may contribute up to $500 for the application of fire retardant to historic or authentic covered bridges in Vermont. For details, you can contact them at (802) 858-6069.
